Lady Gaga is a whole lot smarter than a lot of people give her credit for and while some of her antics are a little bazaar she’s on the money this time.  Her meat bikini and dress outfits that shocked the crowds at the  VMA’s  this week were all part of a publicity stunt to raise awareness of the US military’s don’t ask don’t tell policy on gay soldiers.  I won’t pretend to know a lot about this issue but have listened to the stories of a few serving soldiers that were interviewed for an ABC radio program a year or so ago. The law introduced by the Clinton administration basically allows gays to serve as long as they stay in the closet. If you are out when you apply you are out FULL STOP. Sounds pretty primitive to me.

Anyway, the law came up for review after President Obama made it an election promise to remove it and it is currently going through the political system like a dose of salts (it’s not a given that it will pass as many people are worried about the change de-stabilising the military by bringing down moral).

Lady Gaga has put her weight behind the cause in a bid to bring equality and fairness to the country’s defence force and I applaud her for that. After all it is a bit ridiculous that the very men and women who put their lives on the line to protect us risk loosing their jobs  because of their sexuality.

I agree with Gaga: Let’s get behind this effort to repeal the don’t ask, don’t tell law. It’s silly, degrading and totally irrational.

Life is much more beautiful when we replace hate with love and respect.
