Talking of Evidence: Proctor and Gamble Get Serious with Pro X

I have had my head in clinical papers all day as I try to work out whether to get all excited about a couple of new product launches that are making headlines at the moment. One is from Nu Skin who’s new and improved range talks about how it works on gene expression  to reduce the signs of ageing and secondly there is the new range from Proctor and Gamble.  I am going to tackle the Nu Skin research later this week but for now, what is going down at P&G?

Proctor and Gamble have just launched Pro X with the tag-line “Potent. Proven. Professional”  that has been proven to work as well as Tretinoin ( a brand name for a vitamin A derivative) for improving the appearance of facial wrinkles.  One product is a cosmetic, the other a prescription medicine.

So I guess it would be rude not to have a better look (picture sourced from Media Post Publications)

Potent.

Well it’s a great word but what does that mean in the skin care sense?  For an ingredient to be potent in the formulation it would have to be used at concentrations high enough to give a measured effect.   It is normal  for  ingredient manufacturers to test their actives in laboratory trials on fake skin or other media to see if they have an effect – in vitro testing.  They may even carry out panel testing (in-vivo) to see if there is a visible effect with the ingredient.  Companies such as Proctor and Gamble would use this data to help select ingredients. They would probably then carry out their own tests to make sure it does what it says it does as nobody’s data is as good as your own 🙂

La Mav- Getting Results Organically

La Mav is a new Organic skin care range that promises to take “organic” hi-tech with it’s potent blend of actives and nutrient-rich base oils. In our last piece we interviewed Dr Tarj Mavi to find out what motivated her to create such a range.  However, we all know that a good idea and lots of passion aren’t enough to get pots on shelves which begs the question  “what makes your range so different”  and then  “where next from here!” I hope that you are enjoying the ride.

Q) Your ingredients list reads like a feast for the skin. Which one ingredient is your favourite and why?

Jojoba Oil which is both an ingredient and a product in itself (La Mav Certified Organic Pure Jojoba Oil) is the cure of all skin conditions. Many consumers are skeptical to use oil on the skin as people inevitable assume that oils will clog the pores and have adverse effects on the skin. But because of the unique anti-bacterial structure of Jojoba Oil, this does not occur. When applied on the skin, the oil is quickly absorbed as its hypoallergenic properties mimic the sebum that is naturally present on the skin. As a result the skin’s natural pH balance is automatically restored.

Acne, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis, skin conditions that affect a large proportion of the world’s population are soothed and in some cases eliminated altogether through daily use of Jojoba Oil. It leaves the skin feeling soft and glowing and another great is that it amazingly helps reduce stretch marks and lighten scares. I use it every night to remove heavy makeup, especially makeup around the eye area and get rid of other impurities that block […]

La Mav – Organic Just got Hi-Tech!

All too often choosing Organic means choosing your environmental principles over your skin-ambitions as many high-tec actives don’t  meet certification requirements. However, after much blood, sweat and philosophising  Dr Tarj Mavi has come up with a plan to treat you, the  organic loving public to a feast of anti-ageing solutions.

She has called this vision of scientific beauty: La Mav and she’s hungry to share it with you!

That all sounds rather fantastic but being a sucker for personal stories I really wanted to know what motivates a perfectly sane and successful scientist to enter the lions den that is the cosmetics industry.  So, I asked her!

An Interview With Dr Tarj Mavi (conducted via e-mail).
Part 1:  Development and Brand Philosophy.
Q) You have a science background, at what point did you decide to take the steps to develop your own range?

It was following the birth of my second child Alex in 1994 and I’d developed a severe case of postpartum pigmentation. I searched everywhere to find a skincare product that would diminish it. However finding a product that was safe, healthy and effective especially since I was still breast feeding proved hard to find. As a scientist in the research and development field for the last twenty years I was already conscious of the cosmetic industry’s affect on our environment and health. The skin is the largest organ in our bodies and many of the products we use on our skin contain toxic chemicals that are absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream. It is not just us who absorb in these toxins but our children who can suffer the effects of exposure through contact.

I wanted to take my knowledge and experience and create a skin care […]
