What do Michelle Obama, Oprah, Beyonce and Naomi Campbell have in common? They are all amazing, hard-working, intelligent and successful role models for young women everywhere?  But of course!  They have bad hair days?   Most probably, you see these women have all been blessed with high maintenance hair, hair that is black and proud!

I was so excited to hear about the work of US comedian Chris Rock as he traveled around the world documenting the hair secrets of women of colour in his fabulous new film  aptly titled “Good Hair”.  Anyone with a hint of afro will know that to “relax” is not all about sitting back in your favorite arm-chair with a good book. The smell, the burn, the hours sitting be-capped, the laughter, the pain, the dollars spent and the endless search for “product”. The market for gels, balms and lotions formulated with  black hair in mind  is growing as more and more women want what they have been genetically denied – poker straight locks. From what I’ve seen this film looks at afro hair through the eyes of real men and women in a funny yet heartfelt way uncovering the high drama and heartbreak involved in taming kinky follicles.

Chris’ film was released in the US earlier this month. I am hoping to be able to see it here in Australia but so far, there is no word on it screening here. I, like many other beauty buffs will have to get our fix from the films website and you tube channel.

Wasn’t it the Rolling Stones that sang “You can’t always get what you want”?  That may be so, but it can be fun trying! Feel Great Being You.
