Gaia Belly Butter

Brand: GAIA

Range: “Pure Pregnancy”

The GAIA range is made in Australia and their newly launched “Pure Pregnancy is a range of natural, organic products that assists the body with the transition from pregnancy to motherhood.”

Packaging: Fun, brightly coloured 150ml tube that is easily recognizable and an ideal volume for bodycare.

Cost: Around $10.99 – $18.70

Labelling:  The front label is uncluttered and clearly highlights the products uses and its natural & organic composition. The back label is well laid out, the directions of use are easy to read and the ingredients are easily referenced.

Formula: The product is a moderately viscous cream that spreads easily during application. A little goes a long way, which is ideal for creams that are applied to the body (especially on expanding tummy’s). It is easily rubbed into the skin, with no sticky after feel though it does leave a light waxy residue on the skin which I think is acceptable seeing the formula contains an impressive amount of natural nourishing butters & oils and can be perceived as the products moisturizing barrier.

Fragrance: I’m not a huge fan of lavender and there’s a distinct lavender note but it has been blended well with the other lovely essential oils (tangerine, mandarin, frankincense & spearmint) to create a softer, soothing fragrance so you don’t get the “granny” lavender smell. The oils are quite substantive to the skin, so it evokes a calming sense of being.

  • “Pure, Natural, Organic”
  • “Helps to maintain the suppleness and elasticity of stretching skin during and after pregnancy”
  • “Enriched with certified Organic Shea Butter, Rosehip Oil and Cocoa Butter”.
  • No petrochemicals, Mineral Oil, or lanolin. Vegan Friendly, Not Tested On Animals”

This product has great skin conditioning ingredients at reasonably high levels, which if applied regularly would help with keeping “belly skin” soft and moisturized. Keeping the skin moisturized may possibly lessen the chances of stretch marks.

Cocoa Butter & Shea Butter

Are two tried and tested effective skin conditioning ingredients that improve the skin’s softness whilst preventing it from drying out by providing an occlusive lipid layer inhibiting water loss. Furthermore, Cocoa butter and Shea butter melt at body temperature this characteristic contributes to the product’s good spreadability.

Rosehip & Wheat Germ Oils

The Gaia website claims:Organic rosehip and organic wheat germ oils are rich sources of vitamins, which are shown to assist with skin elasticity and especially good for dry or itchy skin.”

Wheat Germ Oil is the ingredient listed second on the products ingredient listing indicating it’s in the product at a significant amount. Wheat Germ Oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and a source of vitamin E a natural antioxidant.

Rosehip Oil is rich in essential fatty acids and possesses a high level of vitamin C.

Both of these oils are nutritive and highly moisturizing with good skin penetrating properties. They are primarily used in products to enhance spreadability and to aid in skin conditioning.

Essential Oils

The Gaia website claims:Includes mandarin, tangerine and frankincense pure essential oils, helps smooth lines and scars, improving the overall appearance of the skin and fades any existing stretch marks.”

The great blend of organic essential oils help to create a unique fragrance that evokes a soothing, calming and caring impression.
